Appearance:
A delicate, almost petite girl, her features hovering between elfin and elegant. Quite attractive, in her own way, although she will never be a large woman by any measure, be it of height or of feminine attributes. In fact, she is not much over five feet tall. Light brown hair is generally worn barely shoulder length, whilst dark eyes show an intense gaze from beneath curved brows. The biggest flaw is her nose, which is about a size too big. Her complexion is very fair, seldom showing any sign of a tan.
She moves quickly, lightly, but not particularly gracefully. Her every action shows a practical approach to life. And her voice has a slightly harsh edge or buzz to it. No Harper prospect, this one.
Personality:
Esta, first of all, does not trust easily. Her respect must always be earned, and mere rank is never enough. Instead, those who would command her must show her that they deserve to be followed. Those who earn her loyalty will find it is absolute. Also, every rule will have to be explained to her, or expect her not to follow it. If there isn't a good reason, then she won't do it. She needs to know how everything works.
Which brings us to the next part of Esta. She needs to know how everything works. Give her a piece of technology, and she'll be taking it apart and putting it back together. Give her a mystery and she'll worry it like a canine until she has it worked out. Give her a teacher and she will ask every question she can until she runs out or...more likely, they run out of time and shoo her off.
Esta is intelligent in some ways...and not in others. She is great with numbers and fantastic with maps, charts and blueprints. She can follow a drill chart in seconds and understand how a complicated machine works just from a drawing. On the other hand, woe betide anyone who tries to teach her how to read and write; the best writing she will ever produce is a scrawl, her spelling is creative at best and her reading slow and painful. She will never be able to satisfy her desire for knowledge by reading books and scrolls, for reading will always be too hard for her to enjoy and actually absorbing knowledge from it will be close to beyond her, especially complicated matters like technology and biology (OOC note: Esta is profoundly dyslexic).
She likes machines, and doesn't much like cute and furry things. Also, the idea of motherhood terrifies her, and she is likely to avoid getting pregnant at, oh, all costs. Fortunately, she isn't particularly attracted to men anyway. She does not like children and tends to stay as far away from the creche as her duties allow. Puppies and kittens hold no attraction to her, and she isn't even likely to *intentionally* Impress a firelizard, although she would treat one well if she happened to stumble across a hatching.

History
Esta's mother was not a wealthy woman. She told the girl her father was a rider; and it may have been true. She was also, frankly, not a very good mother.
From a young age, the girl ran wild. She was pushed into school by a well-meaning friend of her mother's, but began to play truant as soon as she discovered just how hard reading was. Nobody was aware that she had a problem...they all thought she was stupid or lazy.
Fine. She would be stupid and lazy somewhere else. Instead, she honed her intelligence on the streets, and not always on the right side of the law. Sometimes she stole, not for the money, or for the challenge. More often, she practically lived in one of Silence's junkyards, taking things apart, putting them together, and fixing them.
Of course, no craft would take a functionally illiterate girl. Likely, she would have spent the rest of her life tinkering with machines...and probably even made a living at it, but then something unexpected happened.
